Christina Goldbaum is a reporter for The New York Times based in New York City. Prior to joining the Times in 2018, she reported from East Africa and received the Livingston Award for International Reporting, the National Press Club's Edwin M. Hood Award for Diplomatic Correspondence and the Frontline Club Print Award.
Christina began her career at The Cape Times newspaper in South Africa. She later moved to East Africa as a freelance journalist and reported on everything from the vibrant music scene in Kenya to Russia’s growing influence across the continent.
She also spent a year living in Mogadishu, Somalia reporting on issues related to human rights, climate change and terrorism. Her investigative series on civilian casualties from a U.S. military operation was raised in congressional hearings and led to the opening of a Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigation.
As a freelance journalist, Christina's byline appeared in The New York Times, Foreign Policy, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, USA Today, The Daily Beast, Quartz, The Christian Science Monitor, VICE News and others. She also worked as producer, contributing to TV news reports and documentaries for Netflix, PBS Newshour, VICE on HBO and Agence France-Presse among others.
Christina was long listed for the One World Media Awards "Women's Rights Reporting" Award in 2017 and "New Voice" Award in 2018; she was an Editor and Publisher Award finalist in 2018; and her work has been supported by The Fund for Investigative Journalism.
Originally from Washington D.C., she holds a B.A. in political science from Tufts University. Christina speaks conversational Spanish and Swahili, is a member of Women Photograph and received HEFAT training in 2016 and 2017.
